REY, Joseph (1779-1855). 'Inventor of Socialism in France'.
Autograph Letter Signed in French to [Sir John] Bowring (1792-1872, politician, diplomatist & writer), ½-page 4to with integral address-leaf, no place, 19 July 1823. Introducing M. Villerine, a native of Chambray, who has made great sacrifices and must now apply to the Spanish for permission to become assimilated in Italy, and asking asking for Bowring's assistance.

Rey was connected with Lafayette in the abortive Grenoble conspiracy. Bowring travelled often to France in a commercial guise, but was himself a radical and sympathetic to Rey's cause.
