TEMPLE, Frederick (1821-1902). Archbishop of Canterbury. Typewritten Letter Signed ('F. Cantuar') to the Revd A. Perowne, 1 page 8vo, Butharlyp How, Grasmere, 12 August 1899. Stating that 'The decision has been already sent to every Bishop. It is open to every Bishop to act on it at once'. In late July 1899 following a hearing, Temple delivered an opinion on the use of incense and of processional lights. The present letter no doubt refers to his decision that the two practices were neither enjoyed nor permitted by the law of the Church of England. [No: 25366]
