HASTINGS, Warren (1732-1818). Governor-general of India.
Fine example of a ticket of admission to the trial of Warren Hastings, engraved in red and signed by Lord Loughborough, with wide margins. 205 x 160 mm. (ca 8 x 6½ inches).

The trial was held sporadically over a period of seven years - from 1788 to 1795, as and when parliamentary business allowed. See Keith Feiling, Warren Hastings (1955), page 352. By the time the verdict was due to be delivered one-third of the peerage who had been alive when the trial started in 1788 had died. Those who had been in continuous attendance numbered twenty-nine and it was these peers who passed the final verdict.
 Alexander Wedderburn, Baron Loughborough (later first earl of Rosslyn)ÿ1733-1805, became lord chancellor in January 1793.
