FARADAY, Michael (1791-1867). Natural philosopher. Autograph Letter Signed to Lady Chantrey [probably the widow of Sir Francis Chantrey], 1 page 8vo with integral blank, The Green, Hampton Court, 26 July 1860. Thanking her for a letter ('I had not expected an answer or wish to trouble you for one'). Sir Francis Chantrey (sculptor, 1781-1841) had married his cousin, Mary Anne Wale (1787-1875) in 1809. She brought a substantial dowry, said to have been about £10,000. The couple were childless, and Chantrey left the residue of his large fortune (about £150,000) in trust to his wife and then to establish what has become the Chantrey Bequest for the Royal Academy to purchase British paintings and sculpture.
